Introducing Research Alpha's Research-Industry Collaborations
Africa represents over 19% of the global population and carries a disproportionate share of socio-economic challenges, yet contributes ~2% of global research output and ~1% of patents. On the other hand, African industry is bereft of a robust research and development ecosystem critical for driving innovation, managing technological risks and increasing profitability. African corporates, investors and innovators often lack access to validated, contextual and digestible insights on technology readiness, market potential, and regulatory pathways and risks. This enduring and systemic "translational gap" limits the conversion of research into innovative products, scalable interventions and enabling policies. This gap is exacerbated by:
- Limited researchers: Africa has less than 100 researchers per million people – nearly 15 times lower than the world average. This combined with persistent brain drain reduces Africa's capacity to fully participate in global knowledge production.
- Limited advanced research infrastructure: Locally generated research often remains at early discovery stages without the advancement required for commercial application.
- Unequal research systems: 63% of Africa's energy transition studies lack a single African author, 30–50% of Africa's research funding comes from external philanthropies with mandates that often do not align with market-driven innovation.
- Incentive misalignment: massive teaching workloads and perverse academic reward systems confine valuable research insights to academic silos.
- Fragmented ecosystem: Industry partners lack clear pathways to sustainably engage with and support research institutions in the continent.
There is an urgent need for a clearer, sustainable, and mutually beneficial pathway for African industry to contribute to and benefit from African research. Research Alpha is an Africa focused scientific research and advisory firm led by PhD-level experts with a track record of developing and facilitating research partnerships between industry and academia that are collaborative, evidence-driven, and focused on real world impact. Our AI-powered platform connects a rapidly growing network of 50,000+ African research leaders with investors, businesses, and policymakers, enabling real-time discovery, technical advisory and due diligence, research partnerships, and knowledge sharing.
For our research partners, we provide structured mentorship, applied research opportunities, research for business skills development, and industry collaboration platform that enables African scientists to apply their strong disciplinary training to real industry challenges while developing skills relevant for high impact careers. Rather than building stand-alone programs, our model involves partnering with a range of world-class universities to identify talented researchers and advance mutual interests of building cutting edge and relevant translational research ecosystems in the continent. For our industry partners, we derisk innovation, technology and talent pipelines by embedding best in class researchers to work with their teams to provide rigorous analysis on optimising product development, identify innovation opportunities, pilot new technologies or approaches to reduce risks and maximise both financial and social outcomes.
Research and Industry (RAIN) Fellowship Programme
Research and Industry (RAIN) Fellowship Programme is a flagship Research Alpha initiative targeting mid-career African researchers working at universities or research institutions across the continent. The overall vision is to strengthen the pipeline of usable research and evidence that directly informs innovation and industry in Africa. This is achieved by combining high-calibre academic collaboration at universities such as Oxford, MIT, Princeton, ASU, and Cambridge, with embedded placements in African-focused industry or innovation partners.
Key objectives include
- Enhancing the industry and market relevance of Africa-led research by combining academic inquiry with placement in African industry or technology firms.
- Equipping fellows with enhanced 'research for innovation' skills including industry-focused evidence generation, synthesis and translation through Research Alpha's tools and training.
- Providing Africa-focused industry and innovation partners access to cutting-edge research relevant for their specific challenges and opportunities.
- Expanding networks between international scholars and African researchers, and African industry partners, creating the basis for future co-funding and joint ventures.
- Creating and validating models for sustainable research–industry collaborations that persist beyond the fellowship period.
Fellowship Design and Delivery Model
Research Alpha Industry-Research (RAIN) Fellowship Programme will run for one academic year, aligned with the host institution academic calendars. The fellowship will combine collaboration with our Global University Partners (including University of Oxford, Cambridge University, MIT and ASU among others), engagement with African industry partners, and independent research at the fellows' home institutions. Applicants will be required to identify a potential collaborator based in one of our Global partner universities and an industry-relevant research focus prior to submitting their application.
Program Focus will be largely on the application of AI and emerging technologies in Energy, Agriculture, and Health Sectors, recognising the critical need for Africa-led research in these critical sectors. The pilot programme will target up to 5 mid-career researchers from African universities and research institutes.
The fellows and their global collaborators will be matched to an Africa-focused industry partner, and work together to refine their research focus on industry relevant questions. The fellows will be primarily based in their home institutions but participate in global research networks, deliver guest lectures, attend conferences, and research meetings and take part in our professional development program.
The fellowship will include a residency period at one of our global partner universities, where fellows will access cutting-edge research resources and facilities to advance their joint industry-relevant research. At the end of the fellowship, fellows will present their findings to our industry partners and deliver relevant fellowship insights including research briefs, mini-case studies and policy recommendations.
